SUSTech’s Chenglong FU’s research group receives first prize at CAA Science and Technology Awards

On June 2, the Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) held its 2023 Science and Technology Award Ceremony in Beijing.

The project “Key Technologies and Applications of Autonomous Sensing and Control of Medical Rehabilitation Robots”, led by the research group of Chenglong FU, Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), received the first prize of the CAA’s Science and Technology Progress Award.

Professor Chenglong FU’s team collaborated with leading enterprises and research institutions for the project, including the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (Shenzhen), Shenzhen Hanwei Intelligent Medical Technology Co., Ltd., UBTech Robotics Corp Ltd., Orbbec Technology Group Co., Ltd., and Shenzhen Maibu Robot Technology Co., Ltd.

The project introduced innovative methods such as visual perception and understanding of human-machine hybrid environments, generalization and transfer of expert skills, and dynamic online tracking and planning of irregular targets. These advancements enabled autonomous perception and motion control of robots, and have been widely applied in robotic functions such as ultrasound scanning, physical therapy, and rehabilitation exoskeletons.

These achievements have bridged gaps in China’s medical rehabilitation robotics field and spurred ongoing progress and innovation.

The CAA, one of China’s earliest state-level academic organizations, was established on November 27, 1961, with Xuesen QIAN elected as the chairman of the first council.

The Science and Technology Progress Award honors individuals and units who have made significant contributions to technological research, development, innovation, and the promotion and application of advanced scientific and technological achievements in China’s automation field. The award also recognizes efforts in promoting high-tech industrialization and the completion of major scientific and technological projects and plans.
